The one size that works everywhere, and the crop to expect.
The numbers
1080 × 1350 in 4:5 is the largest a feed photo can be. 1080 × 1080 is safe and still common; 1080 × 1920 gets cropped in the feed.
How the grid crops
The profile grid shows a centred square. A 4:5 photo loses about 20 percent of its height in the grid, so keep the subject centred.
Resolution and weight
Export at 1080 wide and let the file be 1 to 3 MB. Too small looks soft; too large is re-encoded anyway.
The habit that saves time
Export two versions: 4:5 for the feed and 1:1 for the grid preview. Never crop in the app.
